The Making of a Human Being: Nature vs Nurture Reading Practice.
This text explores the debate between biological inheritance and environmental influences on human development.
It emphasizes that nature and nurture are interdependent factors rather than opposing forces.
Reading Practice The Making of a Human Being For centuries, scholars have debated whether human characteristics are primarily inherited or acquired. The familiar terms nature and nurture represent these two broad influences. Nature refers to the biological inheritance individuals receive from their parents, including genes that may affect physical appearance, temperament, and certain cognitive tendencies. Nurture, by contrast, encompasses the environment in which a person develops: family relationships, education, culture, nutrition, social experiences, and countless other influences. Although the distinction appears straightforward, human development rarely conforms to such a simple division. Genetic inheritance can establish certain predispositions without determining a person’s eventual characteristics. For instance, someone may inherit biological features associated with exceptional memory, but whether that potential becomes a noticeable ability can depend on education, practice, and motivation. Similarly, an inherited tendency towards anxiety does not necessarily guarantee that an individual will become highly anxious. Supportive relationships and effective coping strategies may alter how such a predisposition is expressed. Environmental influences can be equally complex. Two children raised in the same household may respond differently to identical experiences because their biological characteristics affect how they interpret and react to their surroundings. One child might find a demanding teacher motivating, while another could perceive the same teacher as discouraging. Consequently, the environment itself does not operate independently of the person experiencing it. Modern research increasingly views nature and nurture as interdependent rather than competing explanations. Genes can influence how people respond to their environments, while experiences can affect how certain genes function. In other words, inherited potential and environmental circumstances may continually interact throughout development. This perspective helps explain why even identical twins, despite sharing almost all of their genetic material, can develop differences in personality, preferences, and behavior. The nature-nurture debate, therefore, may be misleading when presented as a choice between two opposing forces. Human development is better understood as a dynamic process in which biological predispositions and environmental experiences constantly influence one another. Rather than asking which factor is solely responsible for making us who we are, researchers increasingly examine how the two become intertwined over time.
