File info: Worksheet on Reflection and Refraction of Light Purpose:This worksheet is designed to help students understand the concepts of reflection and refraction of light. Objectives:Students will be able to define reflection and refraction of light. Students will be able to identify examples of reflection and refraction of light in everyday life. Students will be able to use the law of refraction to calculate the angle of refraction. Materials:Worksheet Pencils or pens Procedure:Introduce the concepts of reflection and refraction of light. Have students complete the worksheet. Discuss the answers to the worksheet questions as a class. Worksheet Questions:Define reflection of light. Define refraction of light. Identify three examples of reflection of light in everyday life. Identify three examples of refraction of light in everyday life. Use the law of refraction to calculate the angle of refraction for a beam of light that passes from air into water at an angle of incidence of 30 degrees. Answers:Reflection of light is the bouncing back of light when it strikes a surface. Refraction of light is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another. Examples of reflection of light in everyday life include:A mirror reflecting an image of a person. A shiny surface reflecting light from the sun. A puddle reflecting the sky. Examples of refraction of light in everyday life include:A straw in a glass of water appearing to be bent. A rainbow forming in the sky. A fish swimming in a tank appearing to be higher in the water than it actually is. Using the law of refraction, we have: sin θ i / sin θ r = n 1 / n 2 where: θ i is the angle of incidence θ r is the angle of refraction n 1 is the index of refraction of the first medium (air) n 2 is the index of refraction of the second medium (water) We are given that θ i = 30 degrees, n 1 = 1.00, and n 2 = 1.33. Substituting these values into the equation, we get: sin 30 degrees / sin θ r = 1.00 / 1.33 sin θ r = sin 30 degrees / 1.33 θ r = arcsin(sin 30 degrees / 1.33) θ r = 19.5 degrees Therefore, the angle of refraction is 19.5 degrees. Extensions:Have students research the different types of reflection and refraction. Have students design experiments to demonstrate the concepts of reflection and refraction. Have students create a presentation or poster on reflection and refraction. |
