It is a solid sphere with a radius of about 1,220 kilometers (760 miles). The inner core is composed mainly of solid iron and nickel. Despite the high temperatures, estimated to be around 5,000-6,000 degrees Celsius (9,000-10,800 degrees Fahrenheit), the immense pressure at the core keeps the iron-nickel alloy in a solid state. The core plays a crucial role in the Earth's dynamics and geophysical processes. The convective motion of the liquid outer core generates the Earth's magnetic field, which helps protect our planet from harmful solar radiation. The core also influences the behavior of seismic waves and plays a role in plate tectonics and the overall heat transfer within the Earth. It's important to note that our direct knowledge of the Earth's core is limited since it is not directly accessible. Scientists study the core through indirect methods, such as analyzing seismic waves generated by earthquakes and conducting laboratory experiments to understand the behavior of materials under high pressure and temperature conditions. |
