It extends from the bottom of the mantle to a depth of about 5,150 kilometers (3,200 miles). The outer core is primarily composed of molten iron and nickel. It is in this layer that the movement of liquid metal generates the Earth's magnetic field through a process called the geodynamo. 4. Inner Core: The inner core is the innermost layer of the Earth, extending from the top of the outer core to the center of the planet. It has a radius of approximately 1,220 kilometers (760 miles). Despite the immense pressure, the inner core is solid due to the intense heat that prevents it from melting completely. It consists mainly of solid iron and nickel. It is important to note that these layers are defined based on their physical and chemical properties. The transition between each layer is not always sharp and can involve gradual changes in properties. Additionally, Earth's layers are dynamic, with processes like convection and plate tectonics constantly reshaping the planet's structure. |
